Jagdeep Dhankar, an NDA candidate, was elected on Saturday as India’s 14th vice president defeating competitor Margaret Alva by 346 votes.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, an advocate, politician, and NDA candidate for vice president, is most remembered for his time as governor of Bengal, where his frequent clashes with Mamata Banerjee made for many headlines and where his voice was frequently more vehement than that of the state’s opposition BJP.
When Mr. Dhankhar was named Governor of Bengal in July 2019, many people perceived his confrontational interactions with the administration as following a pattern already established in numerous opposition-ruled states, including Delhi.
Jagdeep Dhankhar didn’t face a difficult challenge against Margaret Alva in the run to win the Vice-President’s seat. On Saturday, members of both chambers of Parliament casted their votes in the vice presidential race.
