Deputy Superintendent of Police Manisha Ropeta is not only one of the few women in authority positions in Sindh Police, but also the first woman of the Hindu minority to be appointed to that position in Pakistan. It is difficult for women to join police forces in Pakistan because of the male.
Throughout childhood, my sisters and I experienced the same old patriarchal system in which girls were told if they wanted to earn a living, they had to go into teaching or medicine. Having come from a middle-class family in Jacobabad, Ropeta says she wants to put an end to the idea that girls from good families shouldn’t have any contact with the police or district courts.
Women are the most oppressed and the targets of many crimes in our society. I joined the police because I feel our society needs ‘protector’ women. “As she completes her training, Ropeta will serve in a crime-ridden area of Lyari. In her opinion, working as a senior police officer empowers women and gives them authority.
My goal is to promote gender equality in the police force and lead a feminisation drive. The DSP says he has always been drawn to police work and has always been very inspired by it. Originally from Jacobabad in Sindh province, Ropeta belongs to a middle class family.
Her three sisters are all doctors, and her youngest brother is also a student of medicine. Ropeta narrowly missed passing the medical admission exam by one mark. Ropeta chose a police career after placing 16th in the Sindh Public Service Commission examinations. Her desire to challenge the prevalent belief that girls from “good families” should not have anything to do with the police drove her to do so.
