Massive quake of magnitude 7.0 jolts Solomon Islands, tsunami warning issued
Within 300 kilometres (185 miles) of the epicentre, a tsunami warning was issued for a portion of the Solomon Islands' coast.
On Tuesday, a severe 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Solomon Islands. According to eyewitnesses, the earthquake caused violent shaking that sent televisions and other goods flying to the ground. Within 300 kilometres (185 miles) of the epicentre, a tsunami warning was issued for a portion of the Solomon Islands' coast.
The trembling, according to an AFP reporter in the capital, continued for about 20 seconds. People were abandoning their offices and scurrying to higher ground while certain parts of the city were without power. From an initial magnitude of 7.3, the USGS reduced the earthquake's magnitude.
A representative for the prime minister of the Solomon Islands recommended people to promptly relocate to higher ground.
The spokesperson for Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said, "People are advised to move to higher ground right away."
