The outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) declared on Sunday that it had raised its flag at a bridge close to Jingthang Bridge, Jaiaw, to mark its 35th raising day.
Sainkupar Nongtraw, the HNLC publicity secretary, claimed on his Facebook page that a rebel group member raised the flag on Sunday morning.
It was established on August 14, 1987. According to a senior police official, the flag was taken down as soon as they learned about its afternoon hoisting. The police are looking into the event, he added.
The HNLC had earlier claimed that the benefits of its ongoing peace process will empower the indigenous population and result in political reforms. “Our conflict is political in nature.
To alleviate the occasional hardships that our people encounter, we need to find a political solution, Nongtraw had said in a statement.
Meanwhile, on the first death anniversary of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew,the ex-HNLC leader, on Saturday the HNLC also paid respects to its late leader.
“Security forces assassinated him on this day in 2021, but they were unable to put out the spark of the love he stoked in the hearts of the native people, according to Nongtraw.
