Meghalaya is Set to Produce Vegan Leather from Pineapples…

Meghalaya is getting ready to create vegan leather from one of the state’s most popular fruits. According to James Sangma, Cabinet Minister for Forest & Environment and Power, Meghalaya’s government is focusing on making vegan leather from pineapples.

The state of Meghalaya is preparing to explore the use of pineapples in the production of vegan leather said the Cabinet Minister.

Sangma further went on to say that the state intends to open a climate change museum to raise awareness and educate people about the subject.

Minister Sangma further stated that the state is researching the features of pineapples to develop vegan leather from the fruit.

Sangma spoke remotely at TiE Hyderabad’s ‘TiE Sustainability Summit 2021’ on Tuesday. The minister said in his speech that the Meghalaya administration is currently working to get a consensus on including climate change as one of the themes in the school curriculum.

“Meghalaya is one of India’s top pineapple-producing states. It contributes 8% of India’s total pineapple production. Pineapple is the state’s most important fruit crop. Pineapple is a vegan leather that we’re working on. We are also working to reach an agreement to include climate change as a subject in the school curriculum to educate children,” said James Sangma, Meghalaya’s Forest, Environment, and Power Minister.

Minister Sangma noted that forests cover roughly 76 percent of Meghalaya’s area. He also claimed that the state is one of the top five states in terms of biodiversity, with a distinct forest economy.

“There’s also a climate change museum around the block. Through this museum, we seek to motivate action on the climate catastrophe. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our day. He went on to say, “We must rise together to fight it.”

Sangma remarked to the audience, “We aim to create a silicon valley for green-based products.”

It will be a huge accomplishment for Meghalaya if the prescribed plan is accomplished. The state has contributed a significant portion to pineapple production. On the other hand, the structured strategy would also boost economic growth.
