Meghalaya: Shillong Premier League match’s makeshift gallery collapses, injuring three
A bamboo-made gallery, packed with spectators, collapsed during a Shillong Premier League (SPL) match between Mawlai SC and Ryntih FC at Third Ground, Polo Shillong, on Thursday, injuring three people.
In the 45th minute, Mawlai SC supporters were celebrating the club’s first goal when the incident occurred. The final score was 5-0 in favor of Mawlai SC over Ryntih FC.
Local football fans for the Shillong Premier League (SPL) had been accommodated in a temporary gallery by the Shillong Sports Association (SSA). As soon as the injured were treated, the police said they were discharged.
As a temporary gallery, the spectators were warned to be cautious and not move around at the start of the match, according to SSA general secretary SS Rapthap.
There is only enough room for about 200 people in the gallery, he said. The match was attended by more than 1,000 people. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, he said. As a result of the incident, Rapthap said the match was not disrupted.
