Meghalaya: Woman crimes in the state are on the rise, according to the Assembly Committe
The recent daylight murder of a 19-year-old woman in Ribhoi district, Meghalaya, by her partner has alarmed the locals and residents of the state. The Assembly Committee for Women’s Empowerment is concerned about the rise in crimes against women in Meghalaya. Ampareen Lyngdoh, the committee’s chair and a legislator from East Shillong, bemoaned the infrequent occurrences of crime against women while noting that statistically the state was doing well because the IMR and MMR numbers are stable. She made reference to a recent incident in the Ri-Bhoi area when a woman was brutally murdered by her estranged husband.
She pleaded with the Ri-Bhoi authorities to take harsh action right away, saying, “I can accept that police is not completely in control of the crimes that occur around them. In order to prevent homes from turning into unsafe places for women and to prevent them from being ridiculed, attacked, or murdered, perhaps we should stop barking up the wrong tree and instead urge men, women, and families throughout the state to work with the police.
Something is wrong, and after the elections, she remarked, “I would like to see the communities and societies around us contributing to the safety of women.” She advocated for political parties to make a point of highlighting these in their manifestos as key issues.
