Monkeypox Alert: UP issues travel advisory; cases surging worldwide

As cases of monkeypox are rising across the globe, Uttar Pradesh has decided to put persons with international travel history on its radar.

Because cases of monkeypox are on the rise around the world, Uttar Pradesh has decided to put people who have traveled internationally on notice. “People with rashes that are not related to an illness, especially those who have recently traveled to a country where monkeypox cases have been reported or have come into contact with a monkeypox patient, need to be monitored and asked to stay in isolation,” said the officer of the director of infectious diseases.

On Thursday evening, the government issued an advice stating that passengers from other states with a history of overseas travel will be scrutinized. A World Health Organization official said on Thursday that some 200 confirmed and more than 100 suspected cases of monkeypox had been detected outside of the nations where it usually spreads, urging countries to boost surveillance for the contagious disease.

Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria are all endemic for monkeypox, a minor viral infection.

Concerns have been raised about a recent epidemic in non-endemic areas. Although effective vaccines and therapies are available, the worldwide strain is expected to have a fatality rate of roughly 1%.

During an online briefing, WHO senior epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove said cases had been found in more than 20 non-endemic countries so far, with the agency expecting the number to rise.
