A 36-week pregnant woman from Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district was transported on a homemade bamboo stretcher for five kilometres to a hospital on Monday in the absence of an ambulance or a vehicle, according to an official. At the hospital, the woman gave birth to a healthy girl.
The pregnant woman with high blood pressure struggled through labour pains while travelling but arrived at the health centre on schedule.
In the absence of a vehicle or an ambulance, volunteers from the village of Jalilum carried the patient for over five kilometres, according to Dr. C. Lyngdoh, director of the Patharkhmah Community Health Center, who spoke to PTI. Both she and the baby girl she delivered at the CHC, weighing just over four kilos, are doing well, according to Lyngdoh.
People criticised the administration after a video of the woman being carried on the improvised stretcher went popular on social media.
