In a speech to the nation today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the three divisive farm legislation enacted in 2020 will be overturned.
PM Modi apologized for failing to persuade a part of farmers in a televised address to the country on Friday and stated that the parliament will repeal the act by the end of the month.
“The new rules were enacted to strengthen the country’s farmers, particularly small farmers,” he explained. “Despite our best efforts, we were unable to persuade some farmers.”
“While apologizing to the nation, I’d want to remark with a sincere and pure heart that perhaps something was missing in our Tapasya (dedication) because we couldn’t express the truth to some of our farmer brothers as clearly as the light of the Diya. But today is Prakash Parv, and it’s not the time to point fingers. “We haven’t been able to make our farmers understand. It’s not the time to point fingers. I’d like to let you know that the agricultural rules have been repealed “Farmers should return to their homes and fields, the Prime Minister added.
The decision comes ahead of key state elections, over a year after farmers began protesting the laws.
PM Modi stated that his government did everything possible to educate and inform farmers about the rules and that he will continue to strive for their benefit.
PM Modi repealed three divisive agriculture regulations that sparked intense public protests last year, marking his most significant policy reversal since taking office in 2014.
The declaration comes just ahead of important provincial elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, where farmers are a powerful voting bloc. The opposition lambasted the statement, claiming that the decision was made to avoid losing the upcoming elections rather than caring for the farmers. Hundreds of thousands of farmers have been protesting for months, potentially hurting his Bharatiya Janata Party’s chances in both polls. The administration had so far refused to bend from its position, which the demonstrators claimed would jeopardise their livelihoods, resulting in the longest standoff since Prime Minister Modi took office seven years ago.
