According to reports, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president of Sri Lanka, left his official residence on Saturday as demonstrators surrounded the building in Colombo. The events were announced immediately after the Sri Lankan Police used tear gas to disperse crowds of thousands who had assembled for one of the country’s largest anti-government marches this year in the nation’s commercial city.
In order to protest the government for failing to safeguard them from economic collapse, thousands of protestors from all across the island nation crammed onto buses, trains, and trucks came to the streets of Colombo. Demonstrators screamed “Gota go home,” while carrying black and national flags.
In the wake of a catastrophic foreign exchange shortage that sent the country into one of its biggest financial crises in seven decades, 22 million-person Sri Lanka has been shook to its very foundations.
As a result of inflation reaching 70%, Sri Lanka is in the worst slump in its independent history. Many people have been blaming President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the destruction and calling for his resignation due to an ongoing dispute over imports of necessities including food, fuel, and medicine.
