Meghalaya: Shillong's protest violence; female cops attacked in civil hospital, vehicles assaulted, several injured

In a state where it is believed that women occupy the major place in society, exceeding men, it was an extremely embarrassing episode when women were attacked. Since Meghalaya is a matrilineal society, it is well known that women hold respectable positions there. In what can be summed up as an unprecedented episode in Meghalaya's history, protesters attacked three female police constables on Thursday within the Shillong Civil Hospital grounds, causing chaos and mayhem to rule the day.
The three female police officers who were attacked suffered received minor injuries; videos of the attack began to circulate late Thursday night.
The public, patients, and staff were all in a state of terror as the rioters stormed the hospital grounds.

In terms of protests the state has experienced since it was founded, the rioting that took place inside the Shillong Civil Hospital represents a shameful act. A police-seized bus as well as a gypsy were vandalised during the uproar. A bus fire attempt was also made. It is undeniably a terrible behaviour, and while it is understandable that mourning the loss of a loved one is appropriate, it is not acceptable to cause chaos in a hospital setting when many critically ill patients are fighting for their lives.

A traffic booth that was close to the hospital was destroyed and vandalised.
Police responded by firing tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd after rioters threw stones and petrol bombs at them. In the altercation, seven people were hurt, including four police officers. One of the assaulted citizens who was hurt was transported to the hospital after the attack near the Centenary crossroads. According to reports,there was another assault in Bishnupur.
