Shinzo Abe, a former prime minister of Japan, was shot during an election campaign and was taken to the Nara Medical University, where he was later pronounced dead, the hospital confirmed on Friday.
Shinzo Abe was rushed to the hospital in a condition of cardiac arrest at 12:20 p.m. (local time), according to Hidetada Fukushima, professor of emergency medicine at Nara Medical University hospital.
Despite efforts by medical professionals to resuscitate the former prime minister, Abe passed away at 5:30 p.m., according to Fukushima (local time).
Fukushima stated that the politician’s death was caused by blood loss, which, despite extensive blood transfusions, he claimed medics were unable to compensate for.
The ex-wife, PM’s Akie Abe, arrived at the hospital in the late afternoon. Professor Fukushima informed the media that the man’s family had been informed of his passing.
