Silchar MP Condemned attack on the minorities in Shillong; Urged Meghalaya CM to take action
Following the minority communities’ sit-in protest in Shillong on Sunday in response to the recent violence in Lumdiengiri that resulted in the brutal attack on several non-tribal people, Rajdeep Roy, a BJP MP from Assam’s Silchar, urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to take action against the perpetrators of the attacks on January 20, and also mentioned the six-hour agitation staged by a couple from Rilbong on Sunday.
In his appeal to the CM, Roy alleged the police had not taken any action against the perpetrators of the crime.
The MP expressed his support for the Choudhury couple in Shillong, urging the Meghalaya Chief Minister to take prompt action against the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing attended the rally on Sunday to show her support for the Choudhury’s.
“We have seen targeted violence from time to time because there is no rapid arrest and prosecution,” TUR member Angela Rangad stated. In our society and in our state, it appears to be advocating and encouraging people to do so.”
“We have to remember that a society and a state will eventually be assessed by how they treat its minority,” she added, pointing out that there is targeted violence against minorities, whether Christians, Muslims, or any other population in the country.
“Enough is enough. We do not want representatives to come up with fake promises of security. There has to be security,” she added.
The state Bharatiya Janata Party stated it will raise the issue of suspected non-tribal attacks with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui.
“Senior BJP leader Pawan Sharma will meet Cabinet minister and BJP leader Sanbor Shullai and urge him to raise the issue with the Chief Minister and Home Minister,” the BJP said on Sunday, referring to the Lumdiengjri assault case and the idol demolition case in Mawbah, both of which are in the West Shillong constituency.
“Repeated crimes in the same district definitely indicate the existence of a political conspiracy.” “Such occurrences of extreme prejudice should be condemned by everyone since they will only promote hatred,” the party added.
“To reduce crime in the city, the government should install CCTVs in commercial areas, including shops and flats, and financial aid should be offered or CCTVs should be provided at subsidized rates,” it stated.
