In the gloomy month of December, the news that Punjabi fiction writer Sukhjit would get the national Sahitya Academy Award for 2022 for his collection of short stories, "Main Ayanghosh Nahin," was received with great enthusiasm. It is the third collection of short tales by Machhiwara-based author Sukhjit, who originally wrote poetry before switching to fiction and becoming well-known after his first story was published in a literary journal in 1992. Sukhjit remarked in an interview with HT: "I feel humbled to earn this prize, and what was most encouraging were phone calls from senior writers like Mohanjit and Surjit Patar congratulating me. In fact, I learned to write by reading these authors when I was younger. The author is a native of the land; he cultivated his fields for many years before turning exclusively to literature.

The depths of the mind and soul that Sukhjit explores in his writing have garnered praise for his novels. In his own words, "I have always tried to share the complexities of the human psyche with the readers through my novels. However, I have also looked into Indian ideas and mythologies. Bhagwant Rasulpuri, a short story author from Punjab, praised the honour and said of Sukhjit, "He is a serious writer, and what is cheering is that he has gotten the coveted award for his third book, busting the idea that one has to produce scores of novels to win an award."Gul Chauhan, a poet and fiction author, commended Sukhjit's complicated tales and claimed that he "taken Punjabi fiction to places where it had not previously."

Sukhjit also courted controversy by using a fiery pen, and the title of his second book, "Hun Main Rape Enjoy Kardi Haan," caused quite a stir. In contrast, the author made it clear that "It was a political story, and the rape related to the corruption of the system, which becomes a tool even of a woman who comes to power."What is his upcoming project now that he has received the honour at such a young age? "I'll try to write more and better articles for my readers who have supported me," Sukhjit retorted.
