The teens on a family vacation digging the sand on the beach in New Jersey, collapsed on top of them leading an 18-year-old Levi Caverly to death and his younger sister was rescued, on Tuesday.
Police said they were trapped beneath the sand when the hole collapsed into the 10-foot hole on top of them. His sister was saved in the hours-long rescue, in which a machine was used to remove the sand along with rescuers digging on their stomachs.
Levi’s sister, 17, whose name has not been disclosed was buried up to the chest and he was completely submerged under the sand for approximately 10 feet.
To dig out of the sand, the rescuers call out for the front-end loader (bulldozer), and took nearly two hours after the rescue started to retrieve the body of an 18-year-old teenager from the sand but unfortunately, he was not breathing.
The mother Angela Caverly appreciated those who showed involvement in helping, several fire companies, police, and lifeguards were among the rescue she offer thanks.
“We had lots of people trying to help, and we’re very grateful for that,” Levi’s mother, Angela Caverly told a news outlet on Wednesday. “We know he’s with Jesus and smiling down on us.”
She further said Levi was teaching himself computer coding back at home. “He loved music and was playing drums in a praise band at our church. We did home school and (2021) was his last year.” Her daughter is physically well.
