Any recordings of the killing of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that violate their guidelines on harmful content will be removed, according to Twitter and Facebook parent company Meta.
Social media was rife with videos of the attack, many of which showed the shooter firing twice at Abe with a double-barrelled weapon. While some merely display the seconds just prior to and immediately following the attack, others display both shots.
Abe, who announced his resignation in 2020, was shot during a speech, flown to the hospital, and later confirmed dead. At the scene, police detained the alleged shooter.
Twitter’s enforcement teams are attempting to “proactively remove” information that breaks its rules, which include limitations on sensitive media like graphic violence, in order to “address harmful content” related to the assault.
In a prepared statement, Meta wrote, “We are very grieved and astonished at the demise of the former Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Shinzo Abe.”
Violence on our site is not tolerated by us and never will be. We are attempting to delete any offensive content connected to the incident in order to make our platform a secure place to interact, the statement read.
