Savita Punia, the captain of India, made six incredible saves in the penalty shootout to give India its first victory over Canada in an otherwise disappointing tournament. The Indian women’s hockey team overcame Canada 3-2 to sign up for the FIH Women’s World Cup Spain & Netherlands 2022, riding the heroics of skipper Savita in the shootout.
The Indian team overcame Canada 3-2 in sudden death after the two teams tied 1-1 in regulation time to advance to the tournament’s ninth through twelfth places.
India was defeated by Spain in the crossover match to advance to the quarterfinals by a single goal, eliminating them from medal contention.
Salima Tete scored the equalizer for India in the final minute of regulation after Madeline Secco had scored for Canada in the eleventh minute.
Savita, who put on a spectacular performance, made six saves in the shootout, and Navneet Kaur, Sonika, and Neha all scored to give India their first victory in the championship.
The Indian squad had an attacking start to the game, holding onto the majority of the ball while attempting to create space in Canada’s half without doing much damage. On the other hand, Canada took some time to settle into the game and gradually increased the pressure on India. When they gained their first penalty corner of the game in the 10th minute, they launched their first significant offensive, but they were unsuccessful in converting it.
Madeline Secco, who was able to find the back of the net after a mistimed PC attempt, helped them break the tie in the next minute.
India entered the second quarter with a one-goal deficit and came close to breaking through the Canadian defense several times. In the 25th minute, Vandana and Navneet had one such chance when they worked together to take a shot on goal. However, Rowan Harris, a Canadian, stopped the threat. India applied pressure on their opponents and went on to create many opportunities for goals in the last minutes of the first half, but the Canadian defense held Indian attackers at bay to keep their 1-0 lead at the break.
After a few minutes, India gave up another penalty corner, but Savita made an outstanding stop. India continued to win back-to-back penalty corners but failed to capitalize on their opportunities. Lalremsiami’s diving attempt off Salima Tete’s pass from the right flank missed the goal, and India once more squandered a great chance to score.
India demonstrated a desire to score a goal in the final quarter in its desperate search for an equalizer. Salima Tete, who struck the back of the net through a flawless PC variation, gave India the equalizer in the 58th minute after a lot of unsuccessful PC efforts.
On July 13, India and Japan will face off in a competition for positions 9th- 12th placing match.
