Air India plane returned back after Ukraine closed airspace; Thousands of Indians are awaiting flights home

After Ukraine stated it had closed its airspace due to Russian military actions in its eastern breakaway areas, an Air India plane travelling to Ukraine to bring back Indians has returned to Delhi. Thousands of Indians are awaiting flights home from Ukraine, where they are caught in the middle of a battle with Russia.

Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the use of Russian special operations forces in two Ukrainian separatist territories, which Russia recognized as independent nations on Monday.

Following a NOTAM sent to all of the planes heading to the Ukraine, Air India decided to turn back to Delhi.

“The situation is on the verge of becoming a huge crisis. We express our serious worry over recent events, which, if not managed carefully, could jeopardise the region’s peace and security “TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated.

“We demand an immediate de-escalation of the situation and a halt to any additional actions that could exacerbate the situation. We urge all parties to make more efforts to reconcile their various interests “Mr Tirumurti went on to say that all parties’ legitimate security interests should be considered.
