An impassioned discourse about stigmas in the community has been prompted by the death of an Indian-origin lady in New York, who blamed her husband for years of maltreatment for “giving birth only to girls.” Mandeep Kaur, 30, claims in a video posted on Instagram that she accepted everything in the hopes that he would change his ways someday.
The mother of two girls, ages 4 and 2, constantly sobs, “It’s been eight years; I can’t stand daily beatings any more.” She claims that her husband and her in-laws “forced” her to commit suicide while speaking in Punjabi. Please pardon me, Daddy, I’m going to die. Apparently, she passed away on August 3rd.
Mandeep Kaur, originally from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh, married Ranjodhbeer Singh Sandhu in 2015 and emigrated to the US. The husband’s family has not yet responded, and there is no word on whether they will face particular legal repercussions.
The violence would eventually come to an end, her relatives in Bijnor stated today. To bring her body to India, they have now asked the government for assistance.
She describes how her family responded when he “kept her imprisoned in a truck for five days” in the torture video. “My father made a police report about him. However, I did what he begged and requested, saving him. Additionally, she claims that he had extramarital affairs and that his family “did not say anything, which in turn enabled the abuse.” The Kaur Movement, a group that assists Sikh community members who have experienced sexual and domestic abuse, posted the video on Instagram. Many people who made comments about “family and social structure” uploaded clips on Twitter and Facebook.
People from several nations, particularly the Sikh and Punjabi diaspora, adopted the hashtag #JusticeForMandeep on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Many comments said that she had been let down by society. In response, other individuals released videos criticising those who “make things greater than it is”.
