HP: Landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts cause 34 landslides and 19 deaths in 24 hours
34 landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts occurred in Himachal Pradesh as a result of heavy rain on Saturday. According to PTI, which cited officials, 19 people have died and five more are missing in the past 24 hours.
The state’s Mandi, Kangra, and Chamba districts were the worst hit by the torrential rains. Along the boundary of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, a railway bridge that crossed the Chakki river also collapsed as a result of the severe rain.
Mandi, the worst-affected district, recorded 10 fatalities; eight occurred in Kashang Village and two in Sadoha Village. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force and the SDRF are conducting search and rescue efforts to locate the missing individuals. On Friday evening, landslides shut down the Chandigarh-Manali highway beyond Mandi and the route between Mandi and Kullu via Kataula.
According to a formal statement citing Principal Secretary (Revenue) Onkar Chand Sharma, the incidents caused disruptions to 742 roadways and 172 water supply schemes in HP. By Saturday, 407 of the hampered roads had been repaired. According to the Chief Engineer (PWD), the remaining 268 will be fixed by Sunday.
