Indian ASHA Workers Get World Health Organisation’s Prestigious ‘Global Health Leaders’ Award PM applauds
The prestigious WHO ‘Global Health Leaders’ Award was given to Indian ASHA workers (or Accredited Social Health Activist Workers).
The renowned honor was given to the country’s 1 million all-women ASHA for their outstanding contribution to world health, demonstrating leadership and attention to regional health concerns.
Throughout the epidemic, ASHA was recognized for its critical role in integrating the population with the health system and providing primary health care services to rural areas.
According to WHO, ASHA workers offered prenatal care and vaccines for children against vaccine-preventable diseases, community health care, hypertension and tuberculosis treatment, and core areas of health promotion for nutrition, sanitation, and healthy living.
“At a time when the world is facing an unprecedented convergence of inequity, conflict, food insecurity, the climate crisis, and a pandemic,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said of all the award winners, “this award recognizes those who have made an outstanding contribution to protecting and promoting health around the world.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist Workers) employees for earning the WHO Director-General Health Leaders’ Award.
