Authorities reported at least 150 pupils were stranded in a government high school in a village in Dharwad district on Thursday after a local stream overflowed owing to severe rainfall. According to them, the deluge began at 3 p.m.
While the teachers and children waited for the rains to stop so they could return home, the rainfall continued unabated, causing flooding in a nearby stream and turning the school into an island.
It was difficult for the teachers to keep the kids in their classes.
Officials from the Belavatagi panchayat hurried to the scene to ensure the children’s safety and to provide them with food and water.
Officials were in contact with instructors, according to sources, and instructed them not to allow youngsters to enter the water, which was rapidly increasing.
