Meghalaya-Assam border dispute: CMs of the states to meet Amit Shah today
Conrad K Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, and Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, will meet with Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday. The leaders will present their ideas for resolving the decades-old border conflicts between the two northeastern states during the conference. Sangma told reporters on Wednesday that the meeting will take place in Delhi after 6 p.m.
He further stated that the recommendations of the Meghalaya regional committees and the Assam government would be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for further action.
The Assam and Meghalaya cabinets have agreed to a ‘give-and-take’ formula to end their five-decade boundary dispute. Six of the twelve contentious areas’ issues will be settled in the first phase. Hahim, Gizang, Tarabari, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilingkata, and Ratacherra are the six locations that will be addressed in the first phase for final settlement.
The remaining six areas, where the disagreements are more complex, will be addressed later.
According to the plan, the border demarcation would take place after the proper procedures in Parliament have been followed. Inspections will also be carried out by the Survey of India.
Meghalaya will mark its 50th anniversary of statehood tomorrow, and resolving the border issues in at least these areas will be a gift to the state and will contribute to the celebration.
