Meghalaya: KSU shuts the NH6 tollgate in East Jaintia Hills due to poor highway maintenance.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) EJH District Unit shut down the NHAI toll gate at Lumshnong on Thursday to ensure that no fee is collected from vehicles in the alleged absence of any action on the part of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) or the East Jaintia Hills (EJH) district administration to repair the ill-maintained National Highway-6 (NH-6).
It is becoming increasingly difficult for road users to use NH-6 due to deplorable conditions in Khliehriat and Umkiang, which are situated near the district headquarter.
Streamly Suchen, the president of the EJH unit, led a group of KSU members who locked the toll gate, instructing all operators to stop collecting tolls. The Union had urged the Additional Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills a to contact the NHAI, according to the KSU.
The KSU, EJH district unit, commanded by its president Streamly N Suchen, vice-president Satly Ryngkhlem, general secretary Kwillness S Suchiang, shut the toll gate and directed all operators and personnel to stop collecting toll from any vehicles going through the toll gate.
Because of multiple landslides in the Lum Shnong area, the NH 6 road communication between Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya and three neighbouring states of Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura is frequently affected. However, the poor state of these roads makes communication and transportation for basic necessities difficult for the locals.
