NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope hit and damaged by multiple micrometeoroids: Report

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has been damaged after being hit by at least 19 microscopic space pebbles known as micrometeoroids. According to reports, one of the meteorites caused considerable damage to one of the telescope’s 18 gold-plated mirrors. According to reports, the incident occurred between May 23 and May 25 of this year, causing “uncorrectable” damage to a small portion of the space telescope. NASA researchers have published the first photographs of the impact damage in a study paper on arXiv.org.

After six months of commissioning in space, the James Webb Telescope captured global attention as it returned its first five science images. A recent analysis, on the other hand, presents a bleak picture of the coming days.
The assessment, which was released by three space organizations, reveals that the observatory has been hit by many micrometeoroids, one of which may have had a severe impact. Scientists have published an image that depicts the magnitude of the impact sustained by the world’s most powerful observatory.

Micrometeoroids are a frequent hazard for all types of spacecraft in Earth’s orbit. According to Live Science, the US Space Surveillance Network monitors over 23,000 pieces of debris large enough to damage spacecraft. The report also adds that these are only the larger fragments, and that the millions of tiny pieces of orbital debris are nearly hard to track.

Even after a speeding micrometeroid (a small, often dust-sized rock particle) hit and caused a “significant uncorrectable change” to one of the telescope’s 18 gold-coated hexagonal mirrors, NASA and its collaborators concluded that Webb is “fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built.”

Most importantly, they anticipate Webb to outperform their expectations. “Moreover, practically across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than projected,” Webb’s scientists said.
