Anand Mahindra keeps his promise as he gifts a new house to “Idli Amma” on ‘Mother’s Day’
Anand Mahindra received immediate applause from the community for an extraordinarily human act he performed yesterday on the occasion of ‘Mother’s Day’ by presenting a new house to ‘Idli Grandmother.’ K. Kamalthal, 85, of Coimbatore, has become an internet sensation because to her Rs one idli, for which she is affectionately known as “Idli Patti” or “Idli Grandmother.” It’s no surprise that Anand Mahindra, head of the Mahindra Group, thought it was appropriate to provide her with a new home.
On Mother’s Day, the Mahindra company presented the grandma with a 300-square-foot bungalow in Vadivelampalayam, on the outskirts of Coimbatore, with a single bath attached bedroom, a living room, and a dining hall.
“I am genuinely affected by Anand Mahindra Sir’s act,” Kamalthal remarked in an interview with IANS. He had previously given me a gas burner and a grinder after learning of my firewood cooking experience. From the Tamil month of Vaikasia onwards, I will offer idlis from my new residence.
Idli Patti began selling idlis for 25 paise per piece and later increased the price by 50 paise to sell them for Re 1 per piece.
Even though the idli Gradma was scorching in the heat of the fire stove, she continued to sell Idlis at 25 paise per piece, then 50 paise after a few years, and now she sells Idlis at Re 1 per piece for the past several years. It’s a one-of-a-kind Idli, and she attracts customers from all over. During the Covid-19 crisis, she fed a large number of people, including immigrant workers, without collecting a single rupee and garnered widespread praise
“I will not raise the price of idli in the future, and I will sell them at Rs 1 per piece from the new residence until my last breath,” Kamalthal stated. I believe I can sell idlis from the comfort of my own home for the next ten years.” She added.

When the story of her selling idlis for Rs 1 even during the Covid -19 crisis was revealed, the Mahindra group vowed to build her a home, and in April 2021, they purchased 1.75 cents of property in Vadivelampalayam and began construction in February 2022. The land had been registered in Kamalthal’s name.
