Kerala, which is experiencing one of the worst floods in recent history, has already lost over 350 people. Researchers say the latest flood isn’t entirely natural, blaming poor dam management as well.
However, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur have all been issued an orange alert for October 20.
In the districts of Kasaragod, Alappuzha, and Kollam, yellow alerts have been issued. Following incessant rains in Kerala that caused water levels in the state’s dams to rise, officials said two shutters at the Idamalayar Dam in Ernakulam district were opened for 50 cm each at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
The water level in the Idamalayar Dam is 165.70 metres, with a maximum water level of 171 metres and a full reservoir level of 169 metres. In the state, it has been pouring nonstop. Because to the rising water level, the state’s Department of Information and Public Relations has issued a “blue alert” for the Idamalayar Dam.
Meanwhile, Pamba Dam and Kakki Reservoir have been placed on Red Alert, with Pamba Dam having a water level of 985.175 metres and a full reservoir level of 986.33 metres at 8 a.m. today.
