A novel variation known as IHU has been discovered in France. While the new variant, which has 46 mutations, has already infected 12 people, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, researchers cautioned that “it is too early to speculate on virological, epidemiological, or clinical features of this IHU variant based on (just) 12 cases.” While it may pose a greater risk than Omicron, which is touted as highly transmissible but mild in infections and less lethal than the Delta variant,
The variant was initially found in November, according to the WHO, and it has been on their radar since then. According to Abdi Mahamud, a WHO incident manager on Covid, the infection had a lot of possibilities to spread.
Multiple variations are monitored by WHO, and their risk factors are assessed. Because the instances are limited to France, WHO has not classified IHU as a “variant under investigation.”
Scientists believe Omicron, which is expanding at an alarming rate and has already been there for several months, is a greater threat than IHU. On Tuesday, Vinod Scaria, a scientist at the Institute of Genomic and Integrative Biology in Delhi, tweeted: “Given the evidence, there’s no reason to fear or worry too much (right now). But it’s evident that this is something to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.”
