The Myth Behind The Lost City Of Atlantis

The city of Atlantis is said to have sunk into the heart of Atlantic oceans. The lost city still hold enough fascination, for its mystery, among humans. But was this city real? All existing evidence says ‘it wasn’t’.

The mention of the lost can be traced back to 360 BCE. Atlantis first appeared in famous Greek Philosopher- Plato’s  work – Timaus and Critias in the same era.  He mentioned that Atlantis was larger than Libya and Asia combined. According to him   ‘The city of Atlantis’ was said to have been founded by the Greek god of sea – Poseidon – himself, when he fell in love with a mortal. Atlantis had a highly advanced and developed civilization. The city was resided by demi-god (half human – half god). An ‘Uthopian’ society was built that has precious metals like platinum, gold, and silver, as well as a splendid nature.

The city of Atlantis lost under water when unforeseen natural disaster shook the huge landmass and destroyed the entire city finally bringing down the legendary Atlantis and its civilization. According to Plato’s writing the Gods were angry with the residents becoming selfish and unkind and made destruction to befall upon them.

But the question remain, why is this city still engross with much speculation despite being unreal. It is may be due to the fact that human always loved fantasies. We longed for story with a dreamland and Atlantis offers just what we want, enough to hold us captivated and leaves us satisfied. The existence of this city  underwater after it has sunken is probably a myth.

According to Plato, this city was established in an inland 1300 years ago. The city holds lurking mystery that are yet to be  uncover by overwhelming and curious humans even after knowing an unreal fantasy land.

Atlantis is made immortal in our heart. The city has been portrayed in many artistic works, including paintings, movies, and novels. This fictional island has found its place in the fantasy genre  of film industry. A very popular movie of the DC universe is –  ‘Aquaman’ which is based on the lost city of Atlantis that still exist under the sea. The use of this mystery island in media have made it popular among the millennial.
