Speaking at a lawyers’ convention on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the nation’s disastrous economic situation and claimed that “friendly countries had started looking at Pakistan as a nation that is always asking for money.”
The prime minister was cited as saying, “Today, when we go to any friendly country or make a phone call, they think that we have come to grovel for money.” “Where is Pakistan now, 75 years later? Even nations with lower economies have outpaced Pakistan, and we had been travelling about with a begging bowl for the previous 75 years, he said.
The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government under the previous leader Imran Khan was then blamed by Sharif for the spiralling inflation. He said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement was broken by Khan’s administration, which forced the incumbent government to accept stringent terms. If the predetermined requirements were not reached, the IMF even threatened to withdraw its programme, he continued.
