Germany will be using $113 billion on defense amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced In one of the most significant shifts in European security policy in decades, that Germany was committing 100 billion euros ($113 billion) to a special armed forces fund and would keep its defense spending above 2% of GDP from now on.
The German government announced, hours before the order from President Putin to Russia, that they would spend 113 billion euros on defense because of the serious Russian threat.
The German policy shift also came as Italy, France, Austria, Malta, Canada and Belgium joined other EU countries in closing their airspace to Russian aircraft. Meanwhile, large protests for and against the war took place throughout Germany as well as other European countries. Anti-war protesters gathered in Berlin, Rome, Prague and other major cities to demand an end to the war while Russia’s president Vladimir Putin has ordered military exercises on land near Ukraine’s borders.
Thousands of people are rallying to protest Russia’s involvement in the Ukraine. They carry signs saying “Hands off Ukraine”, “Putin, go to therapy and leave Ukraine and world in peace”.
Germany has announced that they plan on spending $113 Billion on defense despite being in a peaceful time period. Germany will start by sending 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger surface-to-air missiles from their Bundeswehr stocks to Ukraine in order to try and battle Russia\’s military forces. They also plan to boost troops in NATO\’s eastern flank, including through adding new deployments to Slovakia.
