India has decided to evacuate its citizens from Ukraine’s war-torn country by land route. As Ukraine has closed its airspace as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalates, stranding hundreds of Indian nationals in the former Soviet Union. While the Indian government began an evacuation effort by sending Air India flights to Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and announced additional flights from Ukraine in the coming days, the Ukrainian government was forced to seal its airspace due to Russian air strikes.
India is now preparing to evacuate its population via alternative routes. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday that teams have been dispatched to Hungary, Poland, the Slovak Republic, and Romania’s land borders with Ukraine to assist in the evacuation of Indian people.
“MEA Teams from @IndiaInHungary, @IndiainPoland, @IndiaInSlovakia, and @eoiromania are on their way to the nearby land borders with Ukraine to assist in the evacuation of Indian people,” said Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs.
