Meghalaya: 2 died, 5 in critical condition and 30 injured in an accident while returning from picnic
After a vehicle turned turtle on Monday afternoon while returning from a picnic at the picturesque Rongma Gittil under the Kharkutta C&RD Block in North Garo Hills, Meghalaya, two people were killed on the spot and another five are said to be in a critical condition. In addition, at least 30 other passengers in the vehicle were injured.
The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to a suspected brake failure, causing it to turn turtle.
An all-male group from the local Church of Silluk in Assam’s Goalpara had gone to the tourist spot for a picnic, according to police reports.
“After informing the Kharkutta PHC of the accident and requesting that ambulances be dispatched to care for the injured, we rushed to the scene.” “Those with minor injuries are currently being treated at the PHC,” a police officer explained.
Those who had significant injuries were referred to Goalpara hospitals, where they are now being treated.
Lokat K Sangma and Hejalson G Momin, both in their 60s, have been identified as the two people that died. The dead and injured are all from the Assamese village of Silluk.
Meanwhile, despite frantic attempts to arrange ambulances to rescue individuals who were gravely injured on Monday, the incident has brought to light the deplorable state of rural infrastructure.
