North East Students Organisation (NESO) to protest across all NE State Capital in August
The North East Students Organisation (NESO), the region’s student organisation, announced a protest across all Northeastern state capitals on August in response to a number of issues in the area, including the implementation of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), the influx of foreign nationals, the AFSPA, and fundamentalist groups operating in the region, particularly Assam.
According to NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa, the meeting in Guwahati, Assam, covered a host of topics, including unemployment, passing CAA, and ILP implementation in the Northeast.
The protests are being planned for three hours in order to bring attention to the concerns of indigenous peoples in the area.
Asked about unemployment, which he believes has become a major problem in the region, Jyrwa said:
All central government offices in the Northeast should be designated as special economic zones, with 100 percent of the C and D category jobs reserved for locals and indigenous people, he stated
Additionally, he stated that the Act East Policy should make the Northeastern states the economic centre rather than just a route for trade and commerce with South Asian nations. Declaring that NESO has previously filed a suit in the Supreme Court challenging CAA and that the most recent hearing was held in January 2020, following which they are still awaiting new dates, he demanded the immediate and total withdrawal of CAA.
