Meghalaya: Dr. R S Thangkhiew awarded “Inspiring Gastroenterologist of India 2022”

Dr. Rangksan Singh Thangkhiew of Super Care Hospital received the “Inspiring Gastroenterologist of India 2022” award during the 5th annual Economic Times Doctor’s Day Conclave 2022 in New Delhi, which can be considered a moment of pride for the state. Actor Sonu Sood from Bollywood presented Dr. Thangkhiew, who has been practising for the past 41 years, with the honour.

The Supercare Hospital was established by Dr. Thangkhiew. He was born in Shillong in August 1957, and grew up in a family of future statesmen who were committed to advancing the needs of the community, which was then residing in the hinterland of post-independence India.

In his pursuit of medicine, he graduated from the prestigious PGIMER Chandigarh. He became the first Khasi to receive a DM (Doctorate in Medicine) in the 1980s.

Furthermore, he was the first DM (Gastroenterology) in North East India. His contributions were numerous. He was the first in the state to provide fiberoptic endoscopy services with an Olympus XQ20 Series fiberoptic endoscope in 1988.

Due of their heroic labour, doctors are often regarded as being second only to God. In India, July 1 is observed as Doctors’ Day to recognise their contributions to society. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) observed Doctor’s Day for the first time on July 1, 1991.

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a distinguished physician and the second chief minister of West Bengal, was born on July 1st, which also happens to be his birthday. He worked as a social worker, an educator, and a freedom fighter. He received the Bharat Ratna in 1961. In honour of Roy’s contributions to the medical community, July 1 is now observed as Doctor’s Day.
