Meghalaya Govt. may reduce GST on essential commodities; Tynsong

The Meghalaya state government may lower Goods and Services Tax (GST) on essential commodities, as it has done with fuel charges. Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Chief Minister, announced on Thursday that the administration will look into lowering the GST on essential items.

“As you may recall, the state government previously decreased the state tax on gasoline and diesel.” We may follow suit. “However, detailed deliberations on how to proceed are required,” Tynsong told reporters.

Tynsong, on the other hand, made it plain that the Centre has the authority to remove GST from basic commodities.

“The GST basic rules are applicable throughout the country,” the deputy chief minister stated. The Opposition has criticised the BJP-led NDA government for imposing a 5% GST on a variety of packaged food items including as rice, wheat, flour, dal, paneer, dry fruits, and so on. The opposition also asked that the GST be repealed.
