On Sunday, a severe heatwave scorched areas of north India, with temperatures reaching 49 degrees Celsius in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, while the forecast office warned of heavy rainfall across Kerala and issued a red alert for five districts.
The Safdarjung observatory in Delhi registered 45.6 degrees Celsius, while Mungeshpur in northwest Delhi and Najafgarh in southwest Delhi reported 49.2 and 49.1 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Safdarjung had the highest temperature of the season. The maximum day temperature in Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region was 49 degrees Celsius, which was the highest in the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this was the warmest May ever recorded in Banda. On May 31, 1994, the district’s previous high temperature was 48.8 degrees Celsius.
While north India battled the heat, most of the southern peninsula was drenched, with Kerala and Lakshadweep registering 52.2 mm and 57.7 mm of rain, respectively, on Sunday. The IMD had issued a red alert for five districts in Kerala: Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, warning of severe rainfall.
