After approving the anti-NEET Bill overwhelmingly by voice vote on Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly has again endorsed it. The bill was reintroduced today to let students apply for undergraduate medical, dental, Indian medicine, and homeopathic programs based on their qualifying exam scores.
Days after Governor RN Ravi returned a similar bill, calling it “anti-poor,” Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state would call a special assembly to enact another measure exempting students from NEET.
The NEET exemption bill proposed by the MK Stalin-led DMK government was returned on Thursday by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, who said it was against the interests of rural students.
The chief minister had previously stated that the Assembly’s passage of the bill exempting NEET reflected the sentiments of roughly 8 crore Tamil Nadu residents. It has to do with the state legislature’s ability to legislate on this issue as well as the House’s sovereignty, he added, adding that the Governor had put the Bill on hold for 142 days.
However, the anti-NEET Bill also allows for a 7.5 percent horizontal quota in medical admission for students from government schools.
