Northeast Disaster: One more death in Arunachal landslide; search for two swept away in flood
The northeastern state has been pummelling by constant rain for the last several weeks, resulting in floods and landslides that have disrupted connection and harmed people. As one more body was discovered buried beneath the rubble in Papum Pare district on Thursday, the number of fatalities brought on by floods and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh this year increased to 18, an official said.
Momita Chakma, 27, was found dead on Wednesday at Chakma camp-1 in Balijan after her body was discovered buried beneath the rubble, according to District Disaster Management Officer Nima Tashi. In the past several days, floods and landslides have claimed the lives of five persons in West Siang district and one in Itanagar’s neighbouring Papum Pare district.
According to Tashi, the search for two persons who were lost in floodwaters in Huto village in the Papum Pare region was restarted on Thursday after being put on hold the day before due to poor weather. The NDRF, SDRF teams are all assisting the rescue operations.
As well as expressing his great sorrow over the incident, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also sent heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
