Anak Krakatau volcano erupts 7 times in 2 days in Indonesia

According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait has erupted seven times in the last two days, spewing hot ash up to 1,500 metres into the air. The organisation issued a statement saying, “The volcano is currently assessed at level three of a four-tiered volcanic alert system.”

According to the BMKG, the volcano’s seismic activity has intensified since two weeks ago. A five-kilometer exclusion zone has been established by the authorities around the volcano, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Since it rose from the ocean at the beginning of the previous century, Anak Krakatau, which is named after the Krakatau volcano, has been intermittently active.

The Java and Sumatra islands, which are both heavily populated, are far from the volcano. It is nevertheless close to the bustling shipping route that links the islands.
