Assam: Protests In Gauhati University takes A Violent Turn, Several Injured

After police attempted to repress protesting university students on August 2, the situation at Gauhati University (GU) in Assam escalated. According to sources, the degree fifth-semester examination results were announced on July 29 and the dissatisfied students staged a large-scale protest on the university campus on August 2. The students who are protesting claim that the results contain a number of abnormalities, and as a result, they have made the decision to organise peaceful protests.

However, the demonstration turned violent when the police attempted to subdue the students by forcibly shoving them into a bus and transporting them to the police station. However, numerous students, including the president and general secretary of the students’ organisation, were hurt in the incident.

A female student who was injured severely in the event has been taken to the hospital for treatment. In the meantime, the university’s students have denounced the incident and asked the administration to provide an explanation for the abuses the police committed against the demonstrators.

“Over 500 students organised a peaceful protest over alleged irregularities in the results from the fifth semester, which the Jalukbari Police and university administration attempted to put an end to. We denounce the police’s barbaric treatment of the students. We demand justice, and we’ll demonstrate until we get it “declared GU General Secretary Biki Sarma.
