According to Reuters, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday after he announced a military operation in eastern Ukraine. The head of a global peace organisation asked Putin to end the conflict, which he described as being fought “in the name of humanity.”
“President Putin, in the name of humanity, return your soldiers to Russia,” Guterres said as the UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting in a desperate attempt to de-escalate tensions between the two countries.
A war would be devastating for Ukraine and far-reaching for the global economy, according to Guterres.
Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a military campaign in eastern Ukraine, the UN head made his remarks. According to allegations in the media, missile strikes were launched against the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the city of Kharkiv.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden of the United States has slammed Russia for a “unprovoked and unjustifiable attack” on Ukraine. “World will hold Russia accountable,” Biden declared, adding that the US and its allies will “keep Russia accountable.”
