Manipurs daughter Mirabai wins gold in Singapore, qualifies for Birmingham Commonwealth Games
Manipur’s daughter has once again brought honour to her home state and country. Mirabai Chanu, the silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, won her first competition back on Friday at the Singapore International Weightlifting tournament.
Chanu tested herself in a heavier weight category (55kg) for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8, and she came out on top. Last year, Chanu won an Olympic gold medal in the 49kg weight class.
Chanu competed after seven months and lifted 86kg in snatch and 105kg in clean and jerk in her third attempt, totaling 191kg and qualifying for the CWG. Jessica Sewastenko of Australia won silver with a lift of 167kg (77+90), while Elly Cascandra Englebert of Malaysia came in third with a lift of 165kg (75+90).
“After six months of intensive training, I was able to achieve this result.” It was a struggle for me to compete in a new weight category, but I’m glad I qualified for the Commonwealth Games,” Chanu remarked.
The Singapore Weightlifting International is a qualifying event for the 2022 Common Wealth Games in Birmingham.
Meanwhile, the Chief Ministers of Manipur and Assam lauded the champion’s extraordinary efforts in bringing honour to not only northeast India, but the entire country.
